The brainstorming session on resonant X-ray scattering was held on June 6 – 8, 2012 in Vancouver. The meeting was primarily focused on two experimental techniques: Resonant X-ray Reflectometry and Resonant X-ray Scattering. In recent years, these techniques have become invaluable tools in solid state research due to their element sensitivity. They have revolutionized our ability to detect even tiny changes in electronic structure and enabled us to study spin, charge and orbital ordering phenomena occurring in the bulk, and at interfaces and surfaces. The goals of this meeting were to further the development and application of the techniques. With these goals in mind, special attention was paid to the theory of resonant x-ray scattering and x-ray absorption in transition metals as well as their compounds. Discussions were held detailing recent experiments performed on selected nickelate and manganite samples that have properties that continue to challenge the condensed matter community. Discussions were also held regarding the development and benchmarking of analytical tools needed to interpret the results of reflectivity measurements. One such analytical tool, a software package for analyzing resonant x-ray reflectometry data, is now fully operational and is being used by the institute members and other researchers.
