Brainstorming Session

Speaker: see program
Date & Time: May 14 - 16, 2014
Location: UBC, AMPEL 311
Local Contact: George Sawatzky
Intended Audience: Graduate

The brainstorming session on Sm hexaboride and related materials was organized to discuss the issues of strong correlation, strong spin orbit coupling, Kondo lattices, and possible Kondo insulators, going on to suggestions of topological correlated insulators in mainly rear earth compounds such as SmB6, EuB6, CeB6, YbB6, EuO etc. The workshop core consisted of six long talks per day given by the experts in the field complemented by long discussions and short presentations related to them. The field of rare earth hexaborides and the interesting physics involved dates back to the 1970’s, and some of the key players involved at that time were invited to the workshop together with new players, both experimentalist and theoreticians, with the aim to establish a connection between past and present and address the most pressing issues in these systems and identify possible resolutions. Several new ideas have been developed during the workshop leading to long term collaboration between workshop participants.
