Quantum information technologies are poised to again transform how we live, work and play. QUANTUM: The Exhibition is the first-ever travelling show exhibition on quantum information science and technology. The Stewart Blusson Quantum Matter Institute (SBQMI) is pleased to be the Presenting Sponsor of the exhibition for its BC showing at Science World.
Visitors to the show exhibition will explore how quantum mechanics and information technology are merging to create the technologies that will revolutionize and redefine the 21st century— and how many Canadian researchers are leading the way.
A special feature of the BC showing of the exhibit will be SBQMI’s superconducting magnetic levitation train, which demonstrates the effects of magnetic levitation (Meissner Effect) and magnetic flux trapping as a puck (made of yttrium, barium, copper, and oxygen) undergoes a phase transition and becomes a superconductor at temperatures below 93K (180C). In this superconducting state, the puck levitates around its magnetic track – essentially becoming, amongst other possibilities, the toy train of the future!
Come meet some of our SBQMI students and staff, who will be onsite operating the train and helping to explain the mind-bending world of quantum technologies during the exhibition.
