February 25 – 27, 2012, University of British Columbia

This was a workshop to bring together a large number of MP directors and scientists together with UBC-based scientists to acquaint both parties with each other and to the various ongoing projects. This interaction also opened up the opportunity to discuss new areas of research of interest to both MP and UBC researchers. The workshop was attended by eight MP directors from a total of seven MP institutes and eight UBC research group leaders participating in QMI, together with a large number of students and postdoctoral fellows from UBC and the various MP institutes in Germany. In addition to talks by the MP directors and UBC group leaders, about one third of the talks were presented by the joint MP-UBC postdoctoral fellows and senior scientists as well as graduate students. The topics included topological Insulators, Graphene, Kondo impurities, electronic structure, thin oxide epitaxial films and surfaces, Ultra-fast spectroscopies using synchrotrons and the Hamburg based free electron laser, among others. It was a very successful event to be followed up with similar exchanges every two years.
