The workshop on “Correlated electron effects in transition metal compounds” was held on August 13 – 17, 2012 at the University of British Columbia. This small workshop was organized to discuss new frontiers in solid state research. It developed around presentations given by QMI members and invited speakers such as Daniel Khomskii and Igor Mazin. Both are well known condensed matter theorists who shared their ideas about recently proposed mechanisms for superconductivity in Fe based superconductors; molecule formation in solids; spontaneous currents, dipoles and monopoles in frustrated Mott insulators. Recent experimental and theoretical findings presented by several QMI researchers on pnictides, iridates and cuprates were also discussed. Student participation was particularly encouraged with several talks given by QMI students and postdocs. As a result of the workshop, several ideas that were developed during the discussions have now been incorporated into some long term projects.
