SBQMI Hosts Science Fair Participants

Posted: April 11, 2017

On Friday 7 April, Walter Hardy hosted a dozen visitors to the SBQMI for a “Low Temperatures and Superconductivity” lab tour. The visitors were high school students, on campus to compete in the 2017 Greater Vancouver Regional Science Fair, hosted by UBC. In the picture, Walter is showing superconductivity with a table-top demo. Using liquid nitrogen to cool samples of yttrium barium copper oxide (YBCO), to 77 K and below their superconducting transition temperature, YBCO samples can be made to levitate above permanent magnets.
