International Summer School on Surfaces and Interfaes in Correlated Oxides

Summer School

Speaker: See program
Date & Time: August 29 - September 1, 2011
Location: UBC, Hugh Dempster Pavilion 301
Local Contact: Elfimov, Ilya
Intended Audience: Graduate

August 29 – September 1, 2011, University of British Columbia

The aim of the summer school was to familiarize PhD students and junior postdocs with the physical phenomena observed in solid-state systems with reduced dimensions, with an emphasis on surfaces and interfaces in correlated oxides. The state-of-the art methods to manufacture, characterize and theoretically describe such materials were presented in pedagogical, comprehensive lectures by leading experts in the field. It was also discussed, how new phenomena and applications arise by elaborate tailoring of novel systems.

Covered Topics:

  • Pulsed-laser deposition and molecular beam epitaxy
  • Resonant elastic and inelastic x-ray scattering and reflectivity
  • Neutron reflectivity
  • Transmission-electron microscopy and EELS
  • Scanning-tunneling spectroscopy
  • Photoemission spectroscopy
  • Transition-metal-oxide electronic structure and properties
  • Density-functional and model Hamiltonian methods
  • Novel functionalities and correlated-oxide electronics
