Congratulations to Assistant Professor Sarah Burke for being awarded $800,000 from the Canadian Foundation for Innovation (CFI) through the John R. Evans Leaders Fund (JELF). The JELF helps a select number of exceptional researchers at institutions across the country to conduct leading-edge research by giving them the tools and equipment they need to be or become leaders in their field. Co-applicants for the award were Professors Douglas Bonn and Andrea Damascelli (who is also the SBQMI’s Scientific Director).
Sarah’s project is entitled: “Tool for Multimodal Measurements of Quantum Materials: Scanning Probe Microscopy and Angle Resolved Photoemission”. Her research group focuses on the application and advancement of scanning probe microscopy techniques. This highly versatile family of techniques can be applied to a wide range of materials, and that diversity is represented in the group’s research activities, which range from investigating superconductors to materials for solar energy.
This funding support will help make possible the development of new research infrastructure, which will allow researchers to expand both the types of materials that can be investigated and the methods used. As well, it provides new opportunities for collaboration within SBQMI by bringing two investigative techniques directly together; namely, scanning probe microscopy methods and angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy.
The SBQMI and UBC are very appreciative of this funding support from the CFI towards quantum physics research.
About the CFI
For 20 years, the CFI has been giving researchers the tools they need to think big and innovate by investing in state-of-the-art facilities and equipment in Canada’s universities, colleges, research hospitals and non-profit research institutions.
